The Preschooler will demonstrate their understanding of where in the community they can go for help when they are not at home.

             

Who can help me?

 Summary:  The Preschoolers will identify places in their community.  They will establish what functions they have in the community.  They will also gain an understanding of where they may go to obtain items they need for every day living.

 Status: New

This unit was designed to make the students aware of what is available in their town, due to the fact the elementary portion of the school was moved to another town. 

Understandings- The students will know where in the community they can go if they need something.  The students will also feel safe in their environment and get a feeling of being independent.

Essential Questions:  Where do I need to go to get the things I need?

Knowledge and skills: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the people in their community and the places where they can go to get things that they may need.

Evidence:  Students will demonstrate their knowledge of places in the community by viewing a power point and identify the locations.

Musical chairs- identifying the places visited.

Identify items that are associated to places that were visited.

Learning Activities:

Day 1:    The students will gather in the preschool room.  They will be welcomed by their teachers.     After  playtime they will gather for circle time.  During circle time the book

  At Preschool with Teddy Bear will be read.

 The power point of people in the school will be presented.

After the power point presentation the students will play a bingo game using the pictures of the staff at school.

A tour of the school will be done.  We will take pictures of important rooms and places in our new school.

Sometime during the school time the pictures of the staff and rooms will be reviewed.

We will also discuss rules that we need to follow.  View power point of rules of the school.

Create a book using word of What we have learned.

Day 2:   Review of the power point of school staff.

  We will read a book about going on a field trip. Miss Bindergarten takes a Field trip.  Ask questions about the book

Power point presentation:  Rules of going on a field trip.  Review the rules.

During our tour we will take a digital camera and take pictures of the grocery store.  Pictures will be taken going to the store, being in the store, and returning.

When we return we will discuss what we were shown and we will start to create a book.  We will write three or four items and insert pictures on the page (document used in Word)

Free Play: a grocery store will be set up.   The students will have a cash register, empty containers of food, a grocery cart and bags to pack their groceries.  Play money will be given to the students along with some coupons.  We will also name our store and have a sign posted.

 Science activity- Gather a number of plastic fruits, vegetables, meats, breads, cereal boxes, etc. from the children’s play kitchen set. Use masking tape to lay out the food pyramid with index cards out beside it to label each section. Have the children sort the food into each food group individually or as part of circle time. Tie this in with a visit to the grocery store where you do the sorting as a group as you view different foods as you tour the store. www.perpetual preschool.com)) Theme lists look under grocery.

Math- We can sort all of the fruits, vegetables.  We can chart which pile has the most.  Then we can separate them by color of items and then chart it.  When the charting is completed we can count the items in each box and decide which has more or less.  The chart will be done on the wipe board.

(Have a variety of empty food containers and toy foods. Let each child shop as you sing)

Table time- We will use old magazines and cut out picture of food items that we like to eat.  We will cut the pictures out and glue them on a paper sack.

We will also send the Grocery store a thank you note.  The children will be asked to draw something that they liked or learned about going to the store.  They will be delivered by the teacher at the end of the day.

At the end of the day the pictures taken will be viewed.  We will discuss which picture is first second, etc.  I will also review the pictures rephrasing the terms, beginning, middle and ending.

 

Day 3 We will review the rules for going on a field trip.   We will discuss questions that we could ask.

  Our field trip will be to the café The Checkered apron and the Gas station. 

The digital camera will be used. 

A discussion of what we learned about the 2 businesses.  Two pages will be developed in our word document book.

Free play time:  In the kitchen area there will be a restaurant set up. The restaurant will have tables with table cloths, aprons, a chefs hat, trays, and plastic food.  The students will have menus to order from.  On the student’s computer a driving computer game will be installed.  This program allows them to utilize a steering wheel instead of a mouse to manipulate their cars.

Circle time- selected items will be placed in a bag.  Two bins with pictures of the restaurant and gas station.  The students will be asked to select an item from the bag and determine which bin it belongs to.

 Math time - When this task is completed we will count the items in each bin.  We will determine which bin has more or less.

Activity time-  We will discuss what is good to eat and what isn’t .  Then we will go through magazines and find good food.  The students will cut the pictures out and glue them on a paper plate.

We will write thank you notes to the restaurant and gas station.

 We will discuss the next field trip to the post office.  During the table activity we will make a card for our grandparents. These will be sent to their grandparents.

Day 4:   We will discuss the card we made our grandparents.  We will look at the envelopes that have already been made out.  We will discuss what we put on the envelope and where the stamp needs to be placed.  The students will then get their cards and be instructed how to fold them and place them in the envelope.  The students will then be given a stamp and they will place it in the appropriate corner. 

Field trip- Review rules and off to the Post office.  Take pictures with the digital camera.

Circle time- Read The Jolly Postman.  Ask questions about the book.

Free Play- A post box will be made out of box.  There will be letters in the box that are addressed to each student in the room.  Each envelope will have different a different activity to do and enough activities for each student.    When the student gets their letter they will file each activity in their classmate’s mailbox containers.

When the students have completed the activity they will put the completed worksheets in an envelope and address them and mail them in our mailbox.

The students will also write in their books.

Activity – A box will be set up in the middle of floor, the box is filled with different sizes of envelopes.  The students will help the teacher categorize them.  We will discuss how we can sort them.  When they are sorted the way we want them we can count them and chart them on a wipe board.  We will also discuss if there is another way to sort.  If the students are still interested in the activity we could sort it another way.

We will also write in our books.

 These activities can be done during free play or at circle time. 

Closing- We will review pictures that we took of the post office.  We will work on placing them in the correct order. 

Preview- The next time they come we will go to the fire station and Bank.

Day 5:  Discuss rules and questions we can ask.  Take the digital camera.

Field Trip:    Stop at the Bank first then off to the fire station.

Return to school.

Write the things we learned in our books.

Circle time- Read Clifford goes to the Fire station and Benny’s Penny’s.    Questions will be asked about the books.

Free play:  In one area of the room a simulated bank will be made.  There will be play money, small strips of paper that they can make deposits.    A safe will be made out of a box.

Coloring pages; pertaining to fire stations and or the bank.

Circle time:  The students will determine what pictures goes with what place we visited.

Music time:   the fire song.

Activity:  Worksheet will be found dealing with fire station, or the bank.

Write thank you notes.

Closing: A discussion of the events of the day.    Review the pictures of the field trip and sequence them.

At the end of the day the students will be given the books that were made.


Day 6

 

Review day!  We will discuss what places we went to see.

View the power point of  What is this place.  The students will view the pictures and identify the locations.

 Assessment:   Small pictures or items will be presented to the students along with big envelopes with pictures of places visited.  The student will be given the picture of item and place it in the appropriate place.

Game musical chairs; The picture of places will be placed on the chairs.  When the music stops the students will identify the place.

This could also be done with items found in the places visited.
